First 2010 blog post – Tribute to Paul Harvey

My first post in 2010 is a Tribute To Paul Harvey (1918-2009) a legendary Storyteller who I greatly admired not only for the content of his stories but his delivery. Paul Harvey was an American radio broadcaster famous for his “The Rest of the Story” segments that had a listening audience of 24 million people a week. The most noticeable features of Harvey’s idiosyncratic delivery were his dramatic pauses, quirky intonation and his famous tag line…the rest of the story.

And his story……son of a policeman who was murdered when he as three, Paul Harvey made radio receivers as a young boy. Impressed by his voice a high school teacher encouraged him to apply at the local radio station. His first job was sweeping the floors but soon he was filling in on the air, reading commercials and the news. Eventually, this led to a stellar career as a radio station director, roving reporter for leading news stations, broadcaster and commentator. His own talk show and Comment was streamed on the World Wide Web twice a day and featured on 1,200 radio stations and in 300 newspapers.

For Gen Y’ers, X’ers and Baby Boomers……click here to listen to his legendary voice that captivated many… weaving stories that drew you in, kept you hanging and wrapped up with momentous splendor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jivF03JahHU

My dad introduced me to Paul Harvey as a little girl and we shared a love of his story telling. Our conversations later in life, no matter where I lived, often included “did you hear Paul Harvey’s story today?”. Thanks Dad

Follow up to Webinar and Elevator Pitch “Drive By”

For those of you who attended the webinar last night…merci…apparently almost 200 registered. And a big thank you to the 6 who volunteered to subject their LinkededIn profiles to a bit of scrutiny. Actually, Jason didn’t volunteer but I gave him a few tips anyway.

First a bit of a disclaimer and apology……I didn’t give the Elevator Pitch portion of the webinar adequate coverage as I tried to pack way toooo much into what was suppose to be a 60 minute webinar and lasted 90 minutes. The LInkeded profile portion was covered but the Elevator Pitch portion was more of a “drive by”. The GOOD NEWS is that Jason and I have decided just today to do a webinar soon exclusively on the Elevator Pitch. So stay tuned as again you will be given tips, tools and lots of examples that will be sliced and diced.

Speaking of which…. yours could be selected!!!! Here is the number to record, listen, re-record (to your heart’s content) and send. I will select a few in advance of the webinar and contact you directly so we can work on a “makeover” unless of course it’s perfect. Here is the number to call (214) 615 6505 ext 4737#. Also send me an email after you make the recording.

On other….wanted to address the point made about writing the LI summary in either the third or first person. I highly suggest you write your summary in both the third and the first person and see how it reads for YOUR comfort level….then post that one. I personally prefer the third person for my purposes…but see how it reads in your voice. However, for a plethora of purposes you will need versions of your BIO written in the third person such as for speaking engagements, press kit, proposals, book cover, alumni/association site placement, networking purposes and more.

FREE Webinar. I will be interviewed by Jason Alba on my book and Storytelling in your Elevator Pitch and LinkedIn Summary on Wednesday October 7th 12:30PM EST

Join us for an hour of Storytelling about the “Brand Called You” with a focus on how to tell an effective story in your ELEVATOR PITCH and LinkedIn Summary or BIO. Want feedback on yours??? Submit below and I will critique a select few during the presentation.

This webinar will give you a good flavor of what my book (shortly off to the printer) is about….. speaking of which….. check out my book cover as designed by Sue Brettell of id creative solutions Why the word STORY on the cover in so many languages??? Because in fact, one of the first words uttered by children, across any culture in any language, is the word STORY. That’s right…. we all like a good story so join in on this FREE webinar to learn how to tell your story online and offline to your target in a compelling way.

Podcast on Emotional Intelligence

erinphoto1The first podcast of 2009 features Erin Yoshimira – Founder of Empowerful Changes. She talks about the areas where emotional intelligence and personal branding intersect and how you can leverage both to set you apart in today’s competitive market. Personal branding and emotional intelligence both address underlying emotions, thoughts and feelings — yours and others. To define Personal Branding, it’s about uncovering attributes that differentiates you from your peers while closing the gap on how you’re actually perceived by others. To define Emotional Intelligence it’s about becoming aware of your emotions and those of others, and utilizing that awareness to create more productive relationships. At the heart of both lies authenticity and trust. Some of the questions addressed in the podcast include:
1. What is emotional intelligence (EQ)?
2. Why is EQ more important than IQ today?
3. What are the four cornerstones of EQ?
4. What are the benefits of building EQ skills?

The BIO BLOG is Launched

Ok…it has been festering for some time so here it is……the Visibility Branding Blog a.k.a. the BIO BLOG as this is primarily around the BIO, subject of my upcoming book and the art of “storytelling” about the “Brand Called You”. On the short and long term this blog will provide tips, tools and resources about how to tell your story and how to message your brand in the most compelling and captivating way….and that means online and offline. My book ” I Need a Branded Bio, Now What???” as featured here is well underway but still evolving. I want to use this blog to gather your thoughts, input and questions so I can address and incorporate in the book.
